Efraim Zuroff of Wiesenthal Center's Israel Office
Replies to Jared Israel Efraim Zuroff of the
Israel office of the Wiesenthal Center has replied to points raised by
TENC editor Jared Israel in "The
Croatian Government’s Holocaust-Denying Exhibition at the Jasenovac
Death Camp," which includes criticisms of Efraim
Zuroff's "Ethnic
hostilities prevent truth from being told about Jasenovac." (In case
the link to Dr. Zuroff's article does not work, it is archived at Efraim Zuroff's email is posted below.
Note added February 16, 2006: We have published
three articles relevant to Efraim Zuroff's letter.
1) Regarding Zuroff's claim that Jared Israel miscomprehended
Zuroff's
article on the Croatian exhibition, see 2) Regarding Zuroff's claim that he has consistently opposed Croatian Holocaust denial, see Jared Israel's critique of Croatian President Mesic's speech at the Israeli Knesset and, by way of contrast, Zuroff's unequivocal endorsement of the speech.
3) Regarding Zuroff's statement, in his letter, posted
below, that "I do not think there is a single person who was more
outspokenly critical of the new exhibition than I was," see the
interview about the exhibit with Jasenovac-system survivor Smilja Tišma, published at
Note added May 10, 2009: For a general critique of
Zuroff's stance, including: a) proof that, without any explanation,
Zuroff reduced his stated estimate of the number of victims at Jasenovac
by a full order of magnitude following the trial of Dinko Sakic in
Croatia; b) quotes from Julija Kos, the librarian of the Jewish library
in Zagreb, Croatia, who, as a member of the committee responsible for
the Croatian exhibit, in an act of remarkable bravery, criticized the
exhibit honestly and far more sharply than Zuroff, see Jared Israel's
paper, “Reducing The Number Of Jasenovac Victims Means: ‘Building A Way
For A New Ustashe.’” The paper begins on p. 95 of the
Proceedings of the 4th
International Conference on Jasenovac. Zuroff's letter: reading comprehension =======================
